The Number One Complaint of Struggling Copywriters

    By Michael | August 29, 2008

At least once per month I get an email or a forum private message from a struggling copywriter asking me how I get clients.  It’s usually a newer copywriter who is hungry for work but doesn’t know where to find it.

Almost to a person, they mention that whenever they do find a copywriting prospect that the person doesn’t want to pay them their quoted fee.  Or worse, they offer the copywriter some loose change as payment.

And in each case, I point out to them that they have a serious marketing problem.  They don’t know how to market themselves correctly.

Identify the Cause Then Cure The Problem

In each case, the problem isn’t a lack of copywriting clients.  You can look practically anywhere online or offline and find an overwhelming number of businesses and websites that sorely need the help of a professional copywriter.  In fact, there’s more potential clients out there than there are working copywriters to meet the demand.

As the founder of Market Your Copy and a copywriter who went from zero clients to full-time with 2 months I know what steps are needed to get copywriting clients on a consistent basis.  More importantly, I know what you need to do to get clients that will pay your asking price because they value the work that you are doing for their business.

Before you can start worrying about how to get clients, you need to decide on what types of clients you are looking for.  For example, if you consider yourself a financial investment copywriter, then contacting prospects in the alternative health is a waste of time and money – your time and your money!

Many times, copywriters will look to specialize on a specific niche rather than try to accept every type of client that comes their way.  It’s smart business sense as you start to build a reputation as the “go-to” gal or guy for that niche.

Once you’ve identified the target market you want to after, it’s a lot easier after that.  You’ve eliminated the prospects that you don’t want to work with so you can focus on the ones that you would love to work with.

After that, it’s just matter of turning on your marketing weapons and firing away at your target market.

If you’re still stuck on the concepts of targeting a niche or how to market yourself powerfully, then I have some good news for you.  Based on popular demand, I’ve created a 6 Week Coaching Program called the Market Your Copy Fast Track Program.  You can get all of the details right here: Check out the Market Your Copy  Fast Track Program

Since it’s a new program, you have an extremely rare chance to grab your spot at a pretty sweet price – one that won’t be offered this low ever again.

    Until next time,

    Mike Humphreys
